MY FAVOURITE COLOUR SURFACE DESIGN
My Favourite Colour is a surface design company with a focus on the interior industry. It was launched at the 2012 Design Indaba by fine artist, Frances White, whose love of bright, jewel-like colours and strong pattern have translated into a vibrant collection of textiles, soft furnishings and surface design products.
My Favourite Colour’s fabric collection and soft furnishings range is designed, printed and sewn in South Africa.
I’ve always loved pattern and colour. I studied Fine Art and in my late twenties started dreaming of printing patterns on fabric. I’m inspired by nature, landscapes, the South African floral kingdom, animals and insects, colour, light, vintage Scandanavian floral design and folk art patterns. I love mixing colours and the meditative act of painting, but the advantage to printing is that I can reproduce the same beautiful patterns over and over and use the textiles to make a wide range of functional products.
My favourite design companies are the Swedish textile company Jobs Handtryck, the American decoration company Confetti System and locally I love the colourful leather work made by Missibaba. I also love William Morris’s prolific collection of patterns and my favourite artists are Gary Hume, Mark Rothko, Piet Mondrian, Roy Lichtenstein and the Swiss artists Lori Hersberger and Ugo Rondinone from the two years that I lived in Zurich. Locally I love the work of Jacob Pierneef and the more contemporary Heath Nash, Julia Clark and Dave Southwood. My favourite South African design blogs are Handsome Things (http://handsomethings.com and Miss Moss (http://www.missmoss.co.za/
I feel very lucky to be persuing my dream of decorating the world and making beautiful things. My favourite quote: ‘We are shaped and fashioned by the things we love’ – Goethe.
